The Diocese of Kasese, established in 1989, has been under the steadfast leadership of just two bishops throughout its 37-year existence.
These spiritual guides, Emeritus Bishop Egidio Nkaijanabwo and the current Ordinary Bishop Francis Kibira, have been instrumental in fostering the growth of Catholicism within the Rwenzori sub-region. Their tenures have seen significant advancements in evangelization, education, and social services.
Bishop Francis Kibira, born in 1958, hails from a deeply Catholic family with roots in early catechism work in western Uganda. His journey to the priesthood involved extensive studies, including philosophy at Katigondo Major Seminary and theology in Rome, where he earned a First Class Honours degree. He was ordained a priest in 1984 and later appointed Bishop of Kasese in 2014.
Meanwhile, Emeritus Bishop Egidio Nkaijanabwo, born in 1935, was appointed the founding bishop of Kasese Diocese in 1989. His early life was marked by a calling to the priesthood, leading him to theological studies in England, where he was ordained in 1961. He served in various capacities within the Diocese of Fort Portal before leading the newly formed Kasese Diocese for 25 years.
During his episcopacy, Bishop Nkaijanabwo initiated crucial projects, including the construction of a new cathedral in Kasese Town, which is nearing completion. Upon his retirement in 2014, Bishop Kibira succeeded him, continuing the legacy of service.
Both bishops have left an indelible mark on the Kasese Diocese, strengthening its presence and impact on the community. The diocese is set to host the Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations in 2027, following a scaled-down event in 2026.
