Fighters identified as part of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group linked to the Islamic State, launched a deadly assault on the village of Mbau in North Kivu’s Beni territory on Tuesday night, according to local military reports. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 16 civilians.
The ADF, originally a Ugandan rebel group, has been active in eastern Congo for years and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State approximately a decade ago. Their continued violence poses a significant challenge to stability in the region.
This latest violence occurs in close proximity to areas grappling with the Ebola virus. Health officials have confirmed four Ebola cases in the vicinity of the attack, with two cases in the city of Beni and two in the town of Oicha. This proximity raises concerns about the potential impact on containment efforts.
The ADF have been responsible for other recent atrocities. Over the weekend, the group killed 15 civilians and one soldier in a separate attack in Beni city. The ongoing conflict complicates efforts by the World Health Organization and Congolese authorities to manage the Ebola outbreak, which has seen 344 confirmed cases and 60 deaths reported in Congo, with at least 15 cases confirmed in neighboring Uganda.
