Amolatar District is set to undergo substantial educational reforms, driven by the concerning results of the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). Out of 2,505 candidates who sat the crucial exams, a mere 57 achieved Division One, highlighting a significant need for improvement across the district’s schools.

District Chairman Maris Ogwal Omara has committed to making education a top priority during his five-year term. He announced plans to re-evaluate staffing within schools, with head teachers and educators potentially being reassigned to better address identified performance gaps. “We will reorganise staffing and ensure better coordination among stakeholders to improve learning outcomes,” Omara stated.

This initiative will necessitate a coordinated effort involving school management committees and the District Education Office. The Chairman emphasized that elevating educational standards is a shared responsibility.

Omara’s remarks were made during the handover of instructional materials funded by the Icelandic government through the UCatchUp Programme. He expressed gratitude to Iceland for selecting Amolatar as a beneficiary and urged school leaders to utilize the new resources effectively to boost academic performance.

Resident District Commissioner Sarah Tyan highlighted that the program aligns with the national Vision 2040, aiming to broaden access to quality education. She implored school administrators to ensure the investment translates into tangible results.

The 2025 PLE results were described as “poor” by District Internal Security Officer Anthony Wangada, who called for concerted action to ensure better performance in future exams. The Chief Administrative Officer, Roda Oroma, pledged her office’s support for the UCatchUp Programme, which focuses on enhancing literacy and numeracy in early primary grades.

The UCatchUp Programme has distributed approximately Shs 19.4 million worth of instructional materials to schools. Over the next 18 months, the program will target Primary Three to Five learners in Amolatar and Kwania districts, with potential expansion to other Lango Sub-region districts if successful. Teachers have also received training for remedial lessons for students requiring extra support.
