Ancelotti's Gamble: Neymar's Return Sparks Brazil's Pursuit of Sixth World Cup Crown

Veteran coach Carlo Ancelotti has surprisingly recalled Neymar to the Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup, despite the forward's recent struggles and injury concerns. This move comes as Brazil seeks to end a 24-year wait for their sixth title, facing questions about their squad depth and the integration of aging stars. Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to include the 34-year-old Neymar in Brazil’s World Cup squad has raised eyebrows globally. Neymar, who hasn’t played for Brazil since a serious knee injury in 2023, joins the team after a subdued period in Saudi Arabia and a return to his boyhood club, Santos, where form and fitness have been inconsistent.

Adding to the intrigue, scans last week revealed a calf injury that could sideline Neymar for two to three weeks. However, Ancelotti expressed confidence that the forward could be fit for Brazil’s opening Group C match against Morocco on June 13.

The inclusion of Neymar appears to be a mix of hope and necessity, as Brazil faces a squad somewhat depleted in other areas. Key absences due to injury include Chelsea’s Estevao and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo in attack, and defender Eder Militao, who was expected to bolster the right-back position.

This defensive vulnerability is notable for a nation historically known for its attacking full-backs. Ancelotti is relying on experienced but perhaps past-their-prime players like Danilo and Alex Sandro to cover these crucial roles. Concerns also extend to the goalkeeping department, with Alisson’s season disrupted by injury and Ederson’s move to Turkish football.

While midfield stability may come from the experienced Casemiro, Brazil’s attack still boasts significant talent in Vinicius Jr., Matheus Cunha, Raphinha, and Endrick. The central question remains how Neymar, if fully recovered, would integrate into this potent attacking unit, especially given Ancelotti’s emphasis on high pressing and relentless running.

With 15 players from the 2022 World Cup squad returning, Brazil’s team is rich in experience. Yet, if Ancelotti fails to secure a sixth title, the Selecao will face their longest-ever drought, with the road to 2030 looking increasingly challenging.
