President Yoweri Museveni has delivered his anticipated State of the Nation Address, urging Ugandans to embrace a new era of intensified work and accountability. During his address, the President clarified his recent “no more sleep” directive, stating it signifies a strong stance against corruption and ‘eating’ of public resources, rather than simply a lack of rest.

The address comes at a time when Uganda is facing multifaceted challenges. In the environmental sector, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has been demolishing structures in the Kaliddubi wetlands to restore ecological balance. Simultaneously, there have been interventions against illegal mining activities, such as the eviction of thousands of artisanal miners involved in gold extraction in Mabuka village due to environmental and security risks.

Political analysts have also weighed in on national priorities, with some urging a redirection of funds from “politically motivated programs” towards robust industrialization efforts. These calls highlight a broader national discourse on the most effective path towards sustainable economic development.

Attendees at the State of the Nation Address at Kololo were subjected to strict COVID-19 safety protocols, including temperature screenings and sanitization, underscoring the ongoing need for public health vigilance. The President’s message resonated with a call for leaders to focus on genuine poverty alleviation, expressing strong disapproval of leaders who seem to benefit personally from poverty reduction initiatives.
