President Yoweri Museveni, following his recent inauguration, delivered a significant State of the Nation Address on Thursday, outlining Uganda’s future economic direction. Speaking to the newly sworn-in 12th Parliament at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Museveni stressed the importance of economic sovereignty and industrial development.

The President highlighted the enactment of the Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026, asserting it will safeguard Uganda’s economic independence while remaining open to foreign investment. He called his recent directive “no more sleep” a call against corruption and inefficiency, not just a literal command.

Museveni declared that Uganda’s economy has now established a strong foundation. He urged the new Members of Parliament to align the national budget with initiatives focused on grassroots wealth creation and to promote patriotism to foster civic responsibility and protect national gains.

The address, which officially opens the first session of the 12th Parliament, sets a tone of growth and development. The NRM’s 2026-2031 Manifesto will guide the administration’s focus on commercial agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

Furthermore, Museveni issued a stern warning to “lazy and corrupt leaders,” vowing that his new cabinet will prioritize strict accountability and swift public service delivery. He also pointed to key infrastructure projects, such as the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway, as vital for enhancing Uganda’s trade capacity within the East African Community.
