Rolls-Royce automobiles, aspirational symbols for many in Uganda, represent more than just transport; they embody a rich history of luxury and engineering excellence. While sightings are infrequent, a handful of these prestigious vehicles have cemented their place in the nation’s motoring narrative, ranging from the royal legacy of the Buganda Kingdom to the modern desires of affluent collectors.

One of the most historically significant is the Rolls-Royce Phantom IV, once owned by Sir Edward Muteesa II, the 35th Kabaka of Buganda and Uganda’s first post-independence President. This exceptionally rare 1950s model, delivered to the Kabaka in 1965, was returned to public attention in 2020 and subsequently underwent a comprehensive restoration in England. Funded by well-wishers of the Buganda Kingdom, the restoration, reportedly costing around £300,000, was driven by a desire to preserve Buganda’s heritage. Prince David Kintu Wasajja noted that upon inspection, the car’s engine was surprisingly intact and functional, with most work focused on the interior and bodywork.

Another cherished example is a 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Its owner praises its unparalleled comfort, particularly its soft-sprung seats and suspension, which handle Uganda’s roads with exceptional grace. Despite its age, the vehicle’s classic design and smooth ride remain a preference over many modern cars. Regular maintenance, including starting the engine every other day and annual servicing, keeps this treasure in top condition, with parts sourced from the UK.

In stark contrast to the vintage models, the modern era of Rolls-Royce ownership in Uganda is represented by vehicles like the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Moses Tayebwa (a pseudonym) chose this ultra-luxury SUV for its superior comfort and higher ground clearance, better suited to Kampala’s roads than his previous Ghost. Features like its scanning camera system that adjusts suspension for road imperfections highlight the brand’s integration of cutting-edge technology with its signature luxury, making it a unique, albeit fuel-intensive, statement piece.

These Rolls-Royces, from the royal Phantom IV in Mengo to the Silver Shadow and the modern Cullinan, collectively narrate a story of automotive prestige and enduring allure in Uganda across decades. https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/business/auto/inside-uganda-s-rare-rolls-royce-collection-5483894
