David Kaleebu, a student at Makerere University, has created an innovative solution called Pee-Gal, designed to help women urinate while standing. This disposable paper funnel aims to address sanitation concerns, particularly for elderly women or those who experience discomfort and urinary tract infections from using unhygienic public toilets.
Kaleebu explained that the Pee-Gal is a flexible paper cone that directs urine, minimizing direct contact with toilet surfaces. Each packet includes 15 disposable funnels, along with sanitizer, gel, and lotion to ensure personal hygiene after use. He noted that modern women often face challenges with public restrooms due to their active lifestyles and work commitments.
The Pee-Gal is among 64 student projects showcased at Makerere University’s exhibition. These capstone projects, displayed by the Department of Visual Communication Design and Multimedia Design, span various disciplines including branding, web media, and integrated design practices. The exhibition, held at the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts and the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), runs until June 6.
Other notable innovations include a food delivery app for students, an app for clothing exchange, and a navigation tool for Mulago National Referral Hospital. Projects also feature biodegradable packaging for the ‘rolex’ snack that contains plantable seeds, and a garbage banking system that rewards users for recycling. These projects collectively highlight how design thinking can offer practical solutions to social, environmental, and economic issues.
This innovation is part of a larger exhibition of student projects at Makerere University. https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/news/national/makerere-student-develops-standing-urination-device-for-women-5485674
