Mukono District is set to significantly improve its rural road network through a new Shs230 million community-driven initiative. The Road Gangs Programme, launched by the district’s Works and Engineering Department, aims to tackle the upkeep of rural access roads by engaging local residents.

Under this program, community members will be compensated for maintaining designated stretches of road. Those assigned to a kilometer of road will earn Shs75,000, with potential earnings reaching up to Shs300,000 for maintaining up to four kilometers, depending on the specific tasks and workload.

The allocated funds are specifically designated for the wages of these community road workers. Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Stephen Muhumuza highlighted the dual benefits of the program, emphasizing its role in providing employment and improving essential service delivery. “Maintaining road infrastructure is a key component of service delivery. Roads facilitate movement, trade and access to essential services,” he stated.

District Engineer Herbert Lutwama outlined the scope of work for the road gangs, which includes clearing drainage channels, managing water runoff, slashing grass along road reserves, and ensuring roads remain passable using basic tools. Efforts are also being made to streamline payment processes, with the Finance Officer addressing past issues related to incorrect banking details and considering mobile money options for future phases.

District officials stressed the importance of accountability, honesty, and commitment from the beneficiaries. The program is part of a broader strategy by Mukono District to enhance rural connectivity, improve road safety, and generate income for residents through labor-based public works, ensuring better access to markets, schools, and health facilities. This program is expected to support the routine maintenance of vital community roads. Further details can be found at the Daily Monitor.
