The Democratic Republic of Congo is confronting a sharp rise in Ebola cases, with health officials reporting 71 new infections in a 24-hour period. This surge, predominantly occurring in the Ituri province of northeast Congo, has prompted warnings of “rapid and continuous community transmission” of the deadly virus. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has now infected 452 individuals since the outbreak was declared on May 15, resulting in 82 confirmed deaths.

The affected regions, primarily Ituri province with 65 new cases and North Kivu with six, are characterized by challenging terrain, limited healthcare infrastructure, and ongoing insecurity due to armed group activity. The virus has now spread across 17 health zones in Ituri, seven in North Kivu, and one in South Kivu, with cases also detected in neighboring Uganda.

In response to the escalating crisis, the World Health Organization has unveiled a $518 million, six-month plan to combat the outbreak. The initiative, developed alongside the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, aims to bolster containment efforts in both Congo and Uganda while strengthening preparedness measures in other countries, including enhanced border surveillance.

This outbreak is already the fourth largest recorded in Ebola’s history, underscoring the urgency of the international response and the need for sustained political commitment and resources. The strategy emphasizes a coordinated approach to halt the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable populations.
