The political relationship between Kampala Woman Representative Shamim Malende and her party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), appears to be strained, raising questions about her future within the party. Malende’s infrequent appearances at NUP events, coupled with her extended absence from the country for specialized medical treatment, have reportedly left party foot soldiers disgruntled.
Sources within NUP indicate that while Malende cites illness for her absence, her prolonged silence has fueled suspicion among loyal party members. There were even expectations that she might defy the party’s stance and attend President Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony, a defection that ultimately did not materialize.
This perceived disconnect has led some within the NUP to consider alternative candidates for the Kampala Woman DWR seat, with Shamim Nambassa, a recent KCCA councillor, identified as a potential replacement. The party leadership had previously considered Zahara Maala Luyirika for the Kampala DWR position, a move that Malende countered by intensifying her campaign presence upon her return.
Malende’s tenure has been marked by significant health challenges, yet she has persisted in seeking re-election, even communicating her political messages from her hospital bed. This resilience, while demonstrating commitment, has also placed the NUP in a difficult position regarding candidate selection.
Her situation echoes that of her predecessor, Nabilah Naggayi Sempala, who faced similar pressures and a public fallout with the FDC party. Malende’s current exclusion from shadow cabinet appointments and committee leadership roles suggests a potential sidelining by the NUP leadership. While party Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya stated that the party is evaluating all members for their performance and commitment, Malende’s future within the NUP appears uncertain.
