Museveni Urges Ugandans to Build Domestic Wealth Amidst Middle East Migration
President Museveni, in his latest State of the Nation Address, has challenged Ugandans to prioritize internal wealth creation, citing domestic programs as key to self-sufficiency. This call comes against the backdrop of a significant number of young Ugandans migrating to the Middle East for low-wage work. President Yoweri Museveni, in a robust State of the Nation Address on June 4, 2026, issued a stark warning against economic complacency, urging Ugandans to actively pursue wealth creation within the country. Emphasizing a shift from “just working for the stomach” to strategic, commercially viable endeavors, Museveni highlighted the potential of agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT as pillars for household financial independence.
He pointed to the successful transformation of Uganda’s “cattle corridor” as an example of how localized assets can drive economic growth. Programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and support from the Uganda Development Bank (UDB) were reiterated as mechanisms to foster this domestic prosperity.
However, this push for internal self-reliance contrasts sharply with the ongoing exodus of young Ugandans seeking employment in the Middle East, particularly in the UAE. Reports indicate that hundreds of thousands have migrated for jobs ranging from domestic help to security, primarily driven by high unemployment and limited opportunities at home. Despite the promise of informal salaries, these migrants often face perilous working conditions and exploitative practices.
This year’s address marks a departure from the previous year’s focus on macroeconomic stability and regional integration. Instead, Museveni has directed his critique towards local leadership failures and a perceived lack of personal accountability, urging officials to engage directly with communities rather than remaining in the capital. The President’s message is clear: Uganda must move beyond reliance on labor export and cultivate its own economic potential to achieve true prosperity.
This address serves as a call to action, shifting the national discourse from broader economic indicators to the immediate need for grassroots development and individual financial empowerment. The challenge is for Ugandans to harness local resources and opportunities to build wealth at home.
