The Ministry of Water and Environment has officially broken ground on a significant water quality monitoring and management laboratory in Omoro District. This Shs7.3 billion initiative, funded by the Ugandan government with contributions from the European Commission and the German government through KfW, is set to become a central hub for water management in northern Uganda.
The new facility will not only house a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory to ensure adherence to standards but will also feature a centralized warehouse for essential supplies and a dedicated training center. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance the efficiency of water services and bolster water security throughout the Lango, Acholi, and West Nile regions.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Alfred Okot Okidi highlighted the project’s importance in decentralizing water management. He expressed gratitude to the Omoro District for generously donating 20 acres of land, a significant expansion from the initial allocation, to accommodate the project’s current and future needs. The consolidated infrastructure is expected to expedite response times and improve service delivery.
Eng. Yusuf Lule, deputy branch manager of WSDF-N, emphasized the laboratory’s role in ensuring water quality before distribution, stating that samples from various areas will be tested at the Omoro facility. This quality assurance step is crucial for providing safe drinking water to communities.
The project is being managed by Consulting Engineers Salzgitter, with Zhonghao Overseas Construction Company Ltd serving as the contractor. They have a 12-month deadline to complete the facility. Local district officials have pledged their full support and cooperation to ensure the project’s timely and high-quality execution.
