Recent international reporting has sensationalized the current Ebola situation in Uganda, according to commentary from the Uganda Media Centre. A headline by Al Jazeera, which aggregated figures from both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, was criticized for lazy and generalized journalism, failing to acknowledge Uganda’s independent statistics.

For the record, Uganda has confirmed nine infections with only one recorded fatality. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with partners like the CDC and WHO, is actively managing the cases, with some patients already discharged after testing negative. Border districts are under heightened surveillance, and the ministry assures the public that the situation is under control.

This is not the first time Uganda has faced Ebola; it marks the ninth outbreak. The country has consistently demonstrated its capability to contain the virus with minimal fatalities, largely due to the expertise at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe, considered a center of excellence in viral diseases in the region.

Uganda’s success hinges on a robust strategy of rapid detection, intensive contact tracing, community engagement, and the use of decentralized mobile laboratories. These labs allow for swift sample analysis, often yielding results within 24 hours, significantly reducing response times. This effective model has been honed over years of experience with various Ebola strains, including Zaire, Sudan, and Bundibugyo.

While precautions are in place, including standard operating procedures for public gatherings, daily life such as school and market operations continue normally. The author emphasizes that spreading unverified rumors and sensational data undermines public health efforts, creates panic, and damages the nation’s reputation. Uganda’s transparent approach to managing outbreaks, a policy exemplified by its early and open response to HIV/AIDS in the 1980s, is being leveraged effectively.

The Ministry of Health maintains that the Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease outbreak is being managed proficiently through activated national and subnational response structures, earning commendation for swift containment, tracing, and isolation protocols.
