US considers using Iranian assets for Gulf reconstruction amidst ongoing conflict

The United States is exploring the possibility of redirecting Iranian assets to provide financial assistance for the reconstruction of Gulf states damaged by Iran's recent strikes. This move comes as a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran is being tested by renewed aerial attacks. The U.S. government is reportedly considering a significant step: using Iranian assets to fund the rebuilding of Gulf nations that have suffered damage from recent Iranian attacks. A source close to the matter indicated that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has tasked a team with assessing the costs incurred by U.S. allies in the Gulf.

This potential financial measure could also be applied to future destruction caused by Iran. The revelation arrives as Tehran has escalated its actions, following strikes against Kuwait and Bahrain with further drone launches. This development adds another layer of complexity to the already strained relations and a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

Peace negotiations appear to have stalled, despite efforts by mediators. A Pakistani minister recently traveled to Tehran carrying a message for Iran’s Supreme Leader. Meanwhile, U.S. forces responded to Iranian aggression by striking coastal radar sites in the Strait of Hormuz after intercepting drones that threatened maritime traffic.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed retaliation against U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. While Kuwait reported material damage from ballistic missiles, no casualties occurred. Bahrain reported sirens and calls for citizens to seek shelter. Both Gulf nations have condemned the strikes.

The conflict has had broader implications, including disruptions to global oil prices and supply chains. In a separate regional development, fighting has also flared in Lebanon, with Lebanese military casualties reported from an Israeli strike, a situation Iran has linked to broader peace deal conditions.
