Vipers SC Parts Ways with League-Winning Coach Ivan Minnaert Amidst Tactical Questions

Just days after securing the Uganda Premier League title, Vipers SC has dismissed head coach Ivan Minnaert, marking a recurring pattern of instability at the club. Vipers SC has once again demonstrated their swift trigger finger, parting ways with Belgian coach Ivan Minnaert mere days after he guided them to the Uganda Premier League title. This decision, though surprising to some given the league success, aligns with a history of club leadership at Vipers that prioritizes lofty ambitions over guaranteed job security for coaches, even winning ones.

Minnaert, who arrived at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, in July last year, was aware of the precarious nature of the position. His tenure was immediately under scrutiny following Vipers’ early exit from the CAF Champions League, a result that insiders felt was a direct contradiction to owner Lawrence Mulindwa’s vision of continental dominance.

Even as the team marched towards their eighth league title, whispers of tactical deficiencies persisted. The club’s subsequent elimination from the Uganda Cup semi-finals in April, particularly a perceived lack of game management, amplified calls for Minnaert’s dismissal. Statistics from his 40 matches paint a picture of success, with 25 wins and only two losses (one a boardroom decision), but the narrative suggests these numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Many observers noted that Vipers often appeared more cohesive and tactically astute when assistant coach John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda, who had previously engineered a league and cup double, was allowed greater influence. Minnaert’s farewell message hinted at a strained relationship, referencing the difficulty of ‘practising respect’ and the notion that “football is not always decided on the pitch.”

This abrupt ending mirrors Minnaert’s previous coaching experiences across Africa. With owner Lawrence Mulindwa unveiling a significant Shs6.5 billion budget and reiterating his desire for continental success, the search for a new expatriate coach to tackle this demanding role is expected to begin shortly, aiming to build on the domestic success while pushing for greater international achievements.
