Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas,” is prompting a global conversation about the fundamental nature of artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for humanity. The document challenges the notion that AI can possess consciousness, emotions, or a moral compass, asserting that AI systems “do not undergo experiences” nor do they “feel joy or pain.”

According to the encyclical, AI may simulate human behaviors and even empathy, but it lacks genuine understanding and the ability to discern good from evil or take responsibility for its actions. This perspective is rooted in a theological understanding of humanity, which posits that humans are created in the divine image, possessing an inner life characterized by self-knowledge and the capacity for relational love, akin to the Triune God.

While some AI researchers, like Chris Olah of Anthropic, have presented findings suggesting AI exhibits “introspection” and “internal states” that could mirror human emotions, the burden of proof, the argument goes, lies with those claiming AI possesses these qualities. The Pope’s stance distinguishes AI’s advanced data processing and pattern recognition from genuine human cognition, which involves theorizing, hypothesizing, and learning from limited experiences within social contexts.

The Pope’s message, as highlighted by Michael R. Strain, aims to redirect focus from the awe of AI to the inherent magnificence of human beings. In an era captivated by technological advancements, this reminder of human uniqueness and dignity is considered both timely and essential, underscoring that AI, however impressive, remains fundamentally distinct from the grandeur of human existence.
