Saudi Arabia’s national football team is heading into the World Cup under a cloud of uncertainty following a late change in their coaching staff. Herve Renard, the tactician credited with orchestrating a stunning upset victory against eventual champions Argentina in the 2022 tournament, was surprisingly dismissed in April.
The decision came less than two months before the finals in North America, prompted by a series of unconvincing results that have raised concerns about the team’s preparedness for the expanded 48-team competition.
Renard’s tenure ended after a period of inconsistency, including a heavy 4-0 defeat to Egypt and a 2-1 loss against Serbia in pre-tournament friendlies. The Saudi Football Federation opted for a change, appointing Greek coach Georgios Donis to steady the ship.
Donis, who has significant coaching experience within Saudi football, takes on his first international management role. His task will be to instill discipline and intensity reminiscent of the team’s 2022 campaign.
This coaching upheaval also coincides with a broader debate surrounding the impact of the Saudi Pro League’s aggressive player recruitment. The influx of global stars, triggered by Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival, has elevated the league’s profile but has also led to a reduction in playing time for many Saudi national team players at their clubs.
While captain Salem Al-Dawsari remains a key player, the team lacks the strong momentum they carried into the previous World Cup. However, they can find inspiration in their past performance in the United States, where they reached the knockout stage in their 1994 debut.
