Tunisia’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup was a testament to their resolute defense, shutting out opponents without conceding a goal. This defensive solidarity has long been a hallmark of the Carthage Eagles, making them tough competitors in African football.

However, their historical performance on the global stage paints a different picture, with the team never progressing beyond the group stages in six previous World Cup appearances. Doubts persist regarding whether their disciplined, though often pragmatic, style can challenge elite international teams.

In preparation for Group F, which includes strong opponents like the Netherlands, Japan, and Sweden, coach Sabri Lamouchi has embarked on a subtle squad renovation. He has opted to exclude experienced players such as Ferjani Sassi and Yassine Meriah, signaling a move towards younger talent and renewed vigor.

“These decisions were not easy; on the contrary, they were extremely difficult,” Lamouchi stated, emphasizing his commitment to selecting players who can perform for Tunisia, not to please individuals. The coach is looking to infuse the team with greater dynamism without compromising their defensive foundation.

New faces like Union Berlin midfielder Rani Khedira are expected to contribute, alongside younger prospects such as Paris Saint-Germain’s Khalil Ayari and Canada-based Rayan Elloumi. A key figure expected to carry significant attacking responsibility is Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri. The 23-year-old, developed at Manchester United’s academy, brings creativity and unpredictability to the final third, a quality Tunisia has often relied on less than collective effort.

As Tunisia faces a challenging group, the effectiveness of Lamouchi’s gradual transition will be a critical factor in determining if they can move beyond their reputation as resilient outsiders and make a deeper impact at the World Cup.
