Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), has lauded Uganda’s effective handling of the ongoing Ebola outbreak. His praise comes after a visit to the country, following an assessment of the larger outbreak in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“The country’s surveillance, testing, and case management systems are doing steady work,” Dr. Tedros stated on the social platform X. He highlighted the importance of rigorous screening at Uganda’s borders in identifying and managing cases that have originated from the DRC, which is currently grappling with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
The WHO and Africa CDC are actively providing support to Uganda’s government-led response. According to the Ministry of Health’s latest situation report, Uganda had recorded a total of 19 confirmed Ebola cases as of June 6, 2026. Encouragingly, no new cases were reported in the most recent update, suggesting that containment strategies are proving successful.
Of the 19 cases, 14 were imported from the DRC, while five were Ugandan nationals. The ministry reported that 13 patients are currently undergoing treatment, with four individuals having recovered and been discharged. Tragically, two deaths have been recorded, both linked to imported cases. Despite the cross-border complexities, Ugandan health officials maintain that the outbreak is well-controlled and the nation remains safe.
Dr. Tedros echoed this sentiment, offering condolences to the affected families. He stressed that effective regional collaboration, swift leadership, and mutual trust are crucial for overcoming the current Ebola threat. The WHO chief pledged continued support from his organization to ensure the situation remains under control.
