As concerns over Ebola resurgence grow, Ugandan schools are returning to heightened safety measures, mirroring the pandemic-era Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). From morning handwashing rituals at school gates to temperature checks for secondary students, administrators, teachers, and parents are working collaboratively to shield learners.

Schools are installing handwashing stations equipped with soap and chlorinated water at entrances. Many institutions have also acquired thermometers and sanitizers. Head teachers emphasize the importance of thorough sensitization campaigns for both students and staff regarding Ebola prevention, stressing that vigilance is crucial.

Educational institutions are adhering to guidelines from the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Ministry of Health, focusing on early detection, hygiene, awareness, and minimizing physical contact. Traditional morning assemblies are being reconfigured, with students maintaining wider spacing and teachers reinforcing the need to avoid close interactions.

In some boarding schools, dormitory inspections have been intensified, with staff monitoring cleanliness and personal hygiene. However, challenges persist, particularly in areas with limited resources. Some schools in border districts report a scarcity of handwashing facilities, a lack of thermometers, and insufficient sanitizers, despite the directive to follow SOPs.

Efforts are underway to ensure continuous education about Ebola symptoms and preventive measures, with posters displayed throughout school premises. Visitors are increasingly restricted, and in some border communities, measures have been taken to prevent cross-border student attendance. Health officials are working closely with schools to maintain surveillance and ensure prompt reporting of any suspected cases.

Despite these proactive steps, parental anxiety remains, with a strong emphasis placed on the priority of children’s health. Health experts highlight schools as critical points for disease prevention, underscoring that consistent handwashing, early symptom detection, and strict adherence to health guidelines are vital in curbing transmission.
