The Ugandan Parliament is calling for decisive action to end the pervasive issue of mob justice following the recent death of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo Gyabi. Gyabi was allegedly killed by a mob on suspicion of theft in Kampala.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has directed the Ministry of Internal Affairs to present a comprehensive report to Parliament on the circumstances and prevalence of mob justice incidents nationwide. Nabbanja condemned the act, citing a similar case in Kakumiro District, and pledged that security agencies would work to apprehend culprits and stamp out the practice.
Andrew Ojok, MP for Omoro County, highlighted alarming statistics from police crime reports, indicating over 1,000 fatalities annually due to mob justice. He noted that a significant number of cases remain unresolved, urging for a report on investigation progress and improved police response times to such incidents.
The Speaker, Jacob Marksons Oboth, shared an anecdote from Iganga District, illustrating the danger of vigilante justice and the potential for miscarriages of justice. He questioned the adequacy of sentences for those convicted of mob-related killings.
MPs emphasized the need for swift and fair trials for those involved in mob justice, suggesting public courts at crime scenes as a potential deterrent. The Parliament is seeking a clear strategy from the government to prevent future occurrences of this brutal form of justice.
