Dr. Sam Akankwasa, a distinguished farmer known for his success in piggery, dairy, and goat farming in Rukungiri District, has achieved a significant personal and professional milestone by graduating from the Law Development Centre (LDC). His Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Bar Course) now allows him to practice as an advocate in Uganda.

Akankwasa stated that his pursuit of legal studies was driven by a desire to champion justice, particularly for those in the agricultural sector. He sees his legal career as a complementary rather than a replacement for his extensive work in farming.

“I decided to study law because of the increasing demand for justice, especially for farmers,” Akankwasa explained following the graduation ceremony in Kampala. He currently chairs the Rukungiri Producers Cooperative Union, an organization that supports farmers across several districts in western Uganda through various agricultural enterprises and value-addition initiatives.

A primary motivation for Akankwasa entering the legal field is to assist farmers who often face barriers to accessing justice due to the high costs of legal representation. He highlighted the prevalence of issues like counterfeit agricultural inputs, which severely impact farmers’ productivity and income, often leaving them without legal recourse.

Akankwasa intends to serve as a voice for farmers, educating them on laws pertinent to their businesses. He also urged professionals across all sectors to broaden their awareness of legal frameworks impacting their work.

“Whether you are a farmer, a police officer, a soldier or an agriculturalist, you must know the laws that govern your work,” he advised. He also cautioned against practicing law without proper qualification.

The LDC ceremony saw a total of 1,563 students graduate. Before his success in farming, Akankwasa worked as a farming consultant in Kenya and Namibia.
