Uganda’s tourism industry is evolving beyond its traditional reliance on international visitors, with a robust increase in domestic travel driving significant growth. The latest Tourism Industry Performance Report 2025 indicates a remarkable recovery post-Covid-19, with overall international arrivals climbing to 1.64 million and tourism receipts reaching a record $1.62 billion.
However, the most striking success story is the boom in domestic tourism. In 2024, 3.27 million Ugandans engaged in domestic travel, marking a substantial 17 percent increase from the previous year. This trend has added over 850,000 domestic tourists in just five years, with the average Ugandan now undertaking six domestic trips annually. This growing local participation is filling hotels, boosting spending on transport and hospitality, and contributing significantly to the economy.
Domestic tourists now account for the majority of visitors to Uganda’s national parks, with 259,680 domestic entries in 2025. This demonstrates a growing appreciation among Ugandans for their country’s natural and wildlife attractions. Simultaneously, the hospitality sector, particularly in Kampala, is experiencing higher occupancy rates, bolstered by domestic business travel and conferences.
While international tourism remains vital, with overseas markets like Asia, Europe, and the Americas showing strong growth, the diversification strategy is paying off. The report highlights that overseas visitors now constitute 20.1 percent of total arrivals, up from 10.1 percent. This broadened base, alongside the surging domestic market, is making Uganda’s tourism sector more resilient to global fluctuations.
This shift signifies a maturing tourism model where growth is sustained by both inbound international visitors and an increasingly active domestic travel base, creating a more stable foundation for the industry’s long-term expansion.
