State Minister for Kampala, Joseph Kabuye Kyofatogabye, has issued a strong appeal to religious leaders in areas where cattle-keeping is prevalent to actively collaborate with local authorities in the fight against child marriage. The minister emphasized that this harmful practice is continually robbing young girls of their fundamental right to education and a brighter future.

During the installation ceremony for the new Parish Priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Bugonga in Nakaseke District, Minister Kyofatogabye stressed the importance of religious leaders amplifying community sensitization efforts. He specifically called for messages that highlight the value of educating girls over marrying them off at tender ages, often in exchange for bride price, particularly cattle.

“A girl child deserves to study from Primary One up to university. I feel sorry for parents who marry off girls aged 13, 14, or 15 just to receive cattle. We shall ensure such parents face the law,” Kyofatogabye stated, vowing stricter enforcement against such practices.

He further encouraged parents to leverage church-founded educational institutions, suggesting these offer quality learning alongside essential moral guidance from religious figures. The minister also challenged the youth to proactively seek available employment rather than relying on political promises for financial assistance.

Kyofatogabye pointed to a new coffee factory slated for construction in Butalangu, which is projected to generate over 3,000 jobs. He urged young people to prepare themselves to seize these opportunities for productive work and economic independence.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luweero, Rt. Rev. Lawrence Mukasa, encouraged the youth to engage actively in church ministries and service. The newly installed Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Eliya Kayonga, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged devoted service, acknowledging the diocese’s decision to entrust young priests with leadership roles in new institutions.
