The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has voiced significant concern following the abrupt suspension of operations for Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda’s television, radio, and print media. NMG’s outlets, including NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Dembe FM, KFM, the Daily Monitor, and The EastAfrican, were taken offline in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, 2026.

The association confirmed it is in dialogue with key government bodies, including the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), to ascertain the reasons behind the shutdown. NAB is also seeking clarification from the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), whose X account indicated that operations would not resume without his approval.

These developments followed a security operation at NMG Uganda’s premises in Namuwongo, Kampala. Staff reported being denied access to the building, and broadcast signals for NTV Uganda and Spark TV went dark around 5:00 a.m. Similarly, Dembe FM and KFM ceased transmission, and the Daily Monitor’s printing was halted.

The suspension appears connected to recent posts on social media by CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who had publicly announced the shutdown of NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor. NAB emphasized its commitment to the constitutional rights of the media and assured the public that it is pursuing all avenues for a swift and amicable resolution.

This incident is the latest in a series of encounters between state actors and NMG Uganda. Previous operations and criticisms against the Daily Monitor have occurred in connection with its reporting on sensitive political matters.

NAB stated it will provide further updates as verified facts become available.
