Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda faced significant disruption on Sunday morning as security operatives surrounded their offices in Namuwongo, Kampala. The operation began shortly after midnight, with staff reporting being barred from entering or leaving the premises.
By approximately 5 AM, television and radio stations under the NMG umbrella were forced off air. NTV Uganda and Spark TV viewers encountered “video unavailable” messages on their screens. Similarly, Dembe FM and KFM, which broadcast from the same Namuwongo location, ceased transmission.
The Daily Monitor newspaper also suspended its operations, with its print edition unable to be published as a result of the security action. This move followed a series of social media posts by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who had earlier declared that both NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor would be shut down.
At the time of the report, NMG-Uganda had not issued an official statement regarding the shutdown. This incident marks the latest in a history of confrontations between the Ugandan state and NMG, one of the country’s prominent independent media houses.
Previously, in May 2013, police raided Daily Monitor and Dembe FM, alongside Red Pepper, after the publication of a letter concerning alleged links between government officials and the “Muhoozi Project.” President Yoweri Museveni has in the past been critical of the Daily Monitor’s coverage, once labeling it an “enemy and evil newspaper.”
