Nation Media Group Uganda (NMG-U) has reported that a military operation conducted overnight plunged its operations into disarray.

According to a statement released on June 28, 2026, the group’s headquarters in Namuwongo and its facilities at the Kampala Serena International Conference Centre were targeted by security operatives starting around 1:00 a.m. Sunday.

NMG-U stated that staff were prevented from accessing the premises, effectively halting all operations. Its television stations, NTV Uganda and Spark TV, were taken off air, displaying a “video unavailable” message. Radio stations Dembe FM and KFM, also broadcasting from the Namuwongo location, faced similar disruptions. Furthermore, the production and publication of the Daily Monitor newspaper were significantly impacted.

The incident follows public remarks from the Chief of Defence Forces suggesting that these media outlets might face shutdowns. This event adds to a history of confrontations between the Ugandan state and NMG-U, one of the country’s prominent independent media houses, which has experienced previous shutdowns and raids dating back to 2007.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has expressed deep concern over the situation. NAB confirmed it has initiated engagements with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), and the Chief of Defence Forces to ascertain the reasons behind the shutdown and to seek a resolution.

“We are deeply concerned about this action and its impact on the media ecosystem, and the rights enshrined under the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda (as amended),” the NAB stated, assuring members and the public that they are actively monitoring and pursuing verified information.
