Cinderella Sanyu, widely recognized as Cindy, has publicly decried the Ugandan government’s apparent lack of support for its musicians. The singer feels that local artists striving for both continental and international acclaim are being overlooked.

In a recent interview, Cindy highlighted how governments in other African nations often invest in their musicians as a deliberate strategy for national branding. She contrasted this with Uganda’s approach, which she perceives as a failure to leverage its artists for cultural and economic promotion.

Cindy specifically pointed to Tanzania as an example, referencing the support reportedly given to Bongo Flava sensation Diamond Platnumz. She suggested that the Tanzanian government, even at the presidential level, has funded artists like Platnumz to utilize their global influence as a means of marketing the country.

“Our government doesn’t care,” Cindy stated, emphasizing her belief that Uganda is missing opportunities for international cultural representation. Her comments have amplified an ongoing discussion within the Ugandan music fraternity regarding the absence of robust institutional backing for the creative sector.

This sentiment echoes years of concerns raised by numerous artists and industry figures who advocate for music to be recognized as a significant economic and cultural force, rather than merely a form of entertainment. The call for government intervention to support the growth and global reach of Ugandan music remains a persistent theme.
