At 103 years old, John Mark Bamureba stands as a testament to a life well-lived, particularly in his enduring marriage to his wife, Mary Nakasiya, 93. The couple recently marked an extraordinary 75 years of matrimony in an event held in Butenga, Isingiro District.
Bamureba, whose memory remains remarkably sharp, traces his origins to 1923 in Itojo, Rwampara. His father, a priest, meticulously kept records, ensuring Bamureba’s birth and age are well-documented. His early education was interrupted by a severe illness that necessitated surgery in Tanzania. Upon recovery, he completed his schooling and later pursued skills in tailoring, carpentry, and pottery.
His sharp intellect and disciplined demeanor caught the attention of missionaries, leading him to an interpreter position. He later pursued a secretarial role, learning the trade on the job and eventually rising through the ranks to a well-compensated position.
In 1950, Bamureba’s thoughts turned to marriage. Guided by faith and his grandmother’s blessing, he chose Mary, who he found most suitable. Their courtship was characterized by persistence, with his second letter finally eliciting a positive response. Their wedding in 1951, though humble, was a joyous occasion despite financial challenges, including borrowing shoes and a wedding suit, and relying on hired transport.
When asked about the longevity of his marriage, Bamureba emphasizes shared faith and God’s grace as foundational. He highlights key values: “forgiveness, endurance, compassion, respect, and care—all Godly values for marriage.” He also stresses the importance of transparency in finances, warning against the distrust bred by secrecy.
Bamureba advises modern couples to avoid material comparison and to approach marriage with patience, contrasting it with the hasty unions common today. He and Mary prioritized their children’s education over material desires, a decision that has seen their offspring thrive and care for them in their old age.
Bamureba maintains a disciplined daily routine, incorporating prayer, rest, and cherishing time with his wife. Their shared faith and commitment to Godly values have clearly been the bedrock of their remarkable 75-year journey together.
