The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has formally reached out to the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, requesting a meeting to address the shutdown of Nation Media Group Uganda (NMG-U) media assets. The NAB expressed its hope that a discussion would facilitate the resumption of operations for NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Dembe FM, KFM, the Daily Monitor, and The EastAfrican.
In a letter dated June 28, 2026, the NAB conveyed its desire to engage Gen. Kainerugaba regarding the security-related closure. NAB Chairman Innocent Nahabwe stated that the meeting aims to seek guidance on how media can operate responsibly without posing security risks to the nation. The association affirmed its commitment to working with security agencies to ensure media compliance while advocating for an amicable resolution.
The request stems from a military operation that rendered NMG-U’s premises inaccessible, leading to the interruption of television, radio, and newspaper production. This action followed public statements by Gen. Kainerugaba, who later claimed responsibility for the shutdown.
The NAB has also engaged the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and NMG-U directly, seeking clarification and a peaceful resolution. The organization emphasized its concern over the impact of the closure on the broader media landscape and constitutional rights in Uganda.
This incident is not the first confrontation between Nation Media Group Uganda and state entities. Previous events include temporary shutdowns and raids on its publications following sensitive reporting.
The NAB has assured its members and the public that it is actively pursuing engagement with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, the UCC, and the Chief of Defence Forces to achieve a settlement. Updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available.
