Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Marksons Oboth, has called upon the residents of the Bukedi sub-region to harness the significant economic potential of coffee and cocoa farming as a pathway to eradicating household poverty. Speaking at the launch of the “Coffee and Cocoa Household Poverty Eradication Initiative” in Tororo, Oboth highlighted the project as a crucial turning point for an area historically blessed with agricultural fertility but plagued by persistent poverty.
The high-profile event, officiated by Vice-President Jessica Alupo, saw the attendance of government officials, Members of Parliament, local leaders, and farming communities. Speaker Oboth stressed that this initiative transcends mere agricultural input distribution, marking the commencement of a renewed drive towards wealth creation and economic empowerment.
With Bukedi’s favorable climate and fertile soils, Oboth asserted that coffee and cocoa are prime export commodities capable of substantially boosting household incomes. He urged farmers to embrace modern agricultural practices, utilize quality planting materials, engage in environmental stewardship, and form cooperatives to enhance their market bargaining power, signaling a shift from subsistence farming to a business-oriented approach.
The Speaker assured the public of Parliament’s continued support for the agricultural sector, pledging increased budget allocations and policies to improve rural infrastructure, expand extension services, and promote agro-industrialization. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of resources dedicated to the initiative, ensuring they reach all intended beneficiaries.
Vice-President Alupo underscored the need for improved irrigation infrastructure to support coffee and cocoa cultivation, urging the Ministry of Agriculture to expedite water for production interventions. She also encouraged diversification into these cash crops alongside existing ventures, while cautioning against neglecting food security.
The launch of this initiative has instilled optimism among local leaders and development partners, positioning the Bukedi sub-region for a significant transition towards a prosperous, market-driven agricultural economy.
