Police in Bugiri District have apprehended a local caregiver, 26-year-old Rachel Atikwi, in connection with the tragic death of a four-year-old child. The incident occurred in Bukwaku–Nakavule Village, Nabukalu Sub-county, when the child’s mother, Altronce Kamugisha, sought help from Atikwi instead of a medical professional.

Initial reports indicate that Atikwi, who lacks formal medical training, examined the child and concluded that the uvula, a small piece of tissue at the back of the throat, was the source of the ailment. She then proceeded to cut the uvula using a razor blade.

This procedure led to severe bleeding. Despite being rushed to Bugiri General Hospital, the child was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival. The mother subsequently reported the incident to the police, leading to Atikwi’s arrest.

Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed the ongoing investigation and issued a stern warning to the public. “We caution the public against using unqualified caregivers. It is advisable to seek medical care from recognised health facilities to prevent such tragedies,” Kasadha stated. The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once the investigation is concluded.
