The arrival of two missionaries from the Church Missionary Society (CMS), Lieutenant George Shergold Smith and Reverend C.T. Wilson, at Kabaka Mutesa I’s court in Rubaga on July 6, 1877, marked the official beginning of organized Christianity in Buganda. This event was not accidental but a response to Kabaka Mutesa I’s 1875 request to explorer Henry Morton Stanley for Christian teachers.
The Kabaka’s motives were multifaceted; he sought to gain religious and educational knowledge, foster diplomatic ties with Britain, and bolster his kingdom against potential threats from Egypt and Bunyoro.
The journey for the CMS expedition was arduous. Of the original eight members dispatched from England, only Smith and Wilson survived the perilous trek to Buganda, a journey marked by disease and hardship.
Upon their arrival, the Kabaka welcomed the missionaries, who explained their intention to preach Christianity and introduce literacy. Having previously engaged with Arab and Swahili traders who had brought Islam, Mutesa granted them permission to establish their teachings.
Just a week later, on July 7, 1877, the Kabaka authorized the first recorded Christian worship service in Buganda at the royal palace. This significantly altered the religious landscape, challenging the earlier influence of Islam and setting the stage for the arrival of Catholic missionaries in 1879.
Kabaka Mutesa I skillfully managed the growing religious diversity, balancing Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, and traditional believers. This strategy aimed to leverage inter-religious competition to strengthen his own authority and preserve Buganda’s autonomy. The ensuing rivalries among these faiths would later have a profound impact on Buganda’s political trajectory and the development of modern Uganda, leaving a lasting legacy on the nation’s identity.
