During the ongoing theft trial at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, retired Assistant Inspector of Police Joy Mary Nakku revealed that 12 rolls of curtain material, purportedly stolen from businessman Hajji Sulaiman Lwabuuka Kasule, were found in a shop owned by MP Yusuf Kiruuruta Junior Nkeretanyi.

Nakku, who previously served with the Special Investigations Division, stated that she led the team investigating the alleged theft of curtain materials and accessories valued at over Shs3 billion. The complainant had reported that stock was disappearing from his stores at Eagle Plaza in Kiyembe and his residence in Bweya, Kajjansi.

Hajji Lwabuuka suspected his wife, Shamira Nakachwa, and his brother-in-law, Hamza Mugumuya, of stealing the materials and selling them to traders in Kampala. Following the complainant’s leads, investigators searched various shops.

“He then led us to the shop of Nkeretanyi, where I conducted a search and recovered 12 rolls of curtain material,” Nakku testified. She added that both the complainant and Nkeretanyi claimed ownership of the recovered items, and to mark them, both parties signed the rolls, which have since been presented as evidence in court.

Searches at other businesses linked to businessman Ivan Zziwa and Abdul-Noor also yielded additional rolls of curtain material. Following these discoveries, Nkeretanyi, Mugumuya, Abdul-Noor, Zziwa, and Tamale John were arrested.

Nakku further testified that Nkeretanyi claimed the materials in his shop were ordered from Nairobi and China via WhatsApp, but he provided no supporting documents. The court also heard that CCTV cameras at the victim’s residence were allegedly turned off during the thefts, with suspicion falling on the wife. A child at the residence reportedly saw Mugumuya and Zziwa loading materials into vehicles.

The case, stemming from allegations of systematic theft of billions of shillings worth of curtain materials, continues with the accused denying the charges. The hearing is scheduled to resume on August 11.
