Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach of the German national football team, has signaled his intention to continue in his role, even as his team faces disappointment after an early World Cup exit. Germany was surprisingly eliminated by outsiders Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the round of 32.

This marks a third consecutive World Cup where the German team has failed to advance past the group stages or early knockout rounds, following similar outcomes in 2018 and 2022. Nagelsmann, who took over the helm in 2023, became the youngest coach in a World Cup knockout match in 40 years during this tournament.

“This is no longer in my hands but I am ready if they want,” Nagelsmann stated regarding his position. “I am not someone who runs away. I want to continue.” He added that his focus would be on preparing for the upcoming European Championship and Nations League if the German Football Association (DFB) chooses to retain him.

The loss was particularly stinging as Germany, historically strong penalty takers, saw three players miss their crucial spot-kicks. Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade, and Jonathan Tah were unable to convert.

Nagelsmann acknowledged the team “would have liked to measure ourselves against France in the round of 16,” but ultimately conceded the performance “is just not good enough.” Germany has struggled to make a significant impact on the international stage since their last World Cup victory in 2014.
