Newly elected youth leaders in Kabale District are sounding the alarm over what they describe as critically low funding for youth-focused programs. The insufficient budget is reportedly hampering efforts to enhance the livelihoods of young people and effectively oversee government initiatives intended to benefit this demographic.

The concerns were voiced during the recent swearing-in ceremony for the Kabale District Youth Council, held at Rukiko Hall in Kabale Municipality.

Outgoing Youth Chairperson Tadeo Taremwa highlighted the struggles faced, noting that the available funds are inadequate for running essential youth programs and for monitoring government projects. “The budget is too small. We struggle to supervise youth programs and often rely on well-wishers to do our work,” Taremwa stated, calling for increased government funding to strengthen youth leadership structures and improve service delivery at the district level.

Kabale District LC5 Chairperson Denis Nzeirwe acknowledged the inadequacy of the current budget. He pledged to collaborate with technical teams to advocate for greater resources during the upcoming budgeting process. “More funding will improve the performance of youth leaders and help tackle unemployment and skills gaps,” Nzeirwe commented.

Nzeirwe also pointed out that the allowances for youth council leaders are currently too low to adequately support their work. He promised to lobby the central government for improved financial support, reasoning that “better allowances will motivate leaders to execute their duties efficiently.”

The youth leaders cautioned that without enhanced financial backing, programs designed to address unemployment, skills development, and youth empowerment in Kabale District are likely to remain ineffective. They urged both central and local governments to prioritize youth interventions in future budgets, emphasizing the critical role of adequately supported youth in driving local development.
