Court proceedings against former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago were postponed on Tuesday after prison authorities cited his deteriorating health as a reason for his inability to appear.

Presiding Magistrate Sarah Ann Basemera informed the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court that a letter from the facility holding Lukwago indicated that his condition had significantly worsened. The authorities stated that transporting him to court and having him stand trial would present a serious risk to his well-being.

Lukwago faces charges related to allegedly failing to report information about a supposed plot to overthrow the government, allegations he denies. His absence from court was noted with concern by his family, friends, and legal team, who had gathered at the courthouse.

Following the adjournment, Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, confirmed he had visited his client and described his health as “worrying.” Sseggona mentioned that specialist doctors are now involved in Lukwago’s treatment and appealed for public support and prayers during this “difficult period.”

The case has been adjourned to July 7, when the court will reassess Lukwago’s health status to determine the next steps. This development follows a previous decision by the court to decline Lukwago’s bail application.
