The court proceedings for Erias Lukwago, the former Kampala Lord Mayor and current president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), have been postponed to July 9. The Uganda Prisons Service informed the Makindye Chief Magistrate that Lukwago could not attend court as he is receiving specialized medical investigations and treatment.
This adjournment comes amid significant concerns over the opposition politician’s health. Lukwago’s legal team had previously highlighted his worsening condition while he was on remand at Luzira Prison. Lawyer Medard Lubega Ssegona confirmed that prison authorities officially notified the court and the defense about Lukwago’s medical status, stating that it would be unsafe to disrupt his ongoing treatment.
Ssegona emphasized Lukwago’s current weakness, noting that both prison authorities and hospital medical personnel deemed it inappropriate to move him to court given his frail condition. His family and supporters have repeatedly voiced alarm over his health since his arrest on charges of misprision of treason.
Earlier reports indicated Lukwago is suffering from a severe spinal condition, possibly a dislocated disc, causing intense pain. Concerns have also been raised about his reduced white blood cell count, making him susceptible to infections. The prosecution and defense have both agreed to the adjournment after reviewing the medical reports. Members of the defense team visited Lukwago at Mulago National Referral Hospital, confirming his weak state and need for continued medical care.
Lukwago remains in custody, and the case is set to resume on July 9, when the court anticipates an update on his health and the ongoing state investigations. https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/news/national/lukwago-case-adjourned-to-july-9-over-deteriorating-health-5513614
