Mark Da Urban Disputes Fik Gaza's Dancehall Label
Musician Mark Da Urban has ignited a discussion within Uganda's music scene by asserting that Fik Gaza does not qualify as a dancehall artist, despite his popularity. Da Urban argues that using dancehall-inspired beats alone does not define an artist's genre. Self-proclaimed “Dancehall Maradona” Mark Da Urban has publicly questioned the categorization of fellow artist Fik Gaza, stating that Gaza is not a genuine dancehall musician. In a recent radio interview, Da Urban expressed his view that many artists are mislabeled as dancehall simply because they incorporate dancehall-style rhythms into their music.
“Fik Gaza and dancehall are two different things. Mark Da Urban and dancehall are one and the same. Fik Gaza is good at what he does, but it is not dancehall,” he stated definitively.
Da Urban elaborated on his reasoning, emphasizing that the mere use of a dancehall beat does not confer the title of dancehall artist. He cited the example of Feffe Bussi’s track “Iddi Amin Dada,” which, according to Da Urban, features a dancehall beat but is fundamentally a rap song.
“Some people use dancehall beats and tell people they are singing dancehall, but when you really analyse their music, they are not,” he explained.
These remarks have re-ignited conversations among music enthusiasts and artists regarding the precise definition of dancehall music within Uganda’s dynamic entertainment landscape. While Da Urban conceded Fik Gaza’s evident talent and commercial success, he maintained that the dancehall genre designation should be reserved for artists who authentically represent its core style and cultural elements.
