Tragedy struck in Mbarara City when a fierce fire consumed an electrical shop on Garage Street in Kakoba Division overnight. The blaze, which broke out at the Bishop Wills building, tragically led to the death of the shop’s owner, 55-year-old Fred Tumusiime.

Mr. Tumusiime was reportedly inside the shop when the fire started. Emergency services were alerted, and although firefighters managed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent structures, the electrical shop was reduced to ruins.

According to Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira, Mr. Tumusiime, a resident of Nyakaizi, Kakoba Division, sustained severe burn injuries. He was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital by individuals who arrived before the authorities. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning.

“After we put out the fire, we found out that the owner of the shop, whose name is Fred Tumusiime, was in the shop at the time of the fire. He sustained serious burns and was critically injured and rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital by well-wishers,” SP Kasasira stated.

The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the police. The extent of the financial losses due to the destruction of electrical equipment and stock is estimated to be in the millions of shillings.
