Former minister and businesswoman Miria Matembe made an emotional plea in court seeking immediate medical attention following the denial of her bail application. Matembe, who has been in detention for over a week, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Sheila Gloria Atim at the Luzira Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Matembe informed the court that she is experiencing “severe pain” and urgently requires medical examination. She emphasized that her doctors and family are aware of her condition and have warned her about it. “I cannot bear this pain any longer,” she stated, expressing her desire for a medical scan or hospital admission rather than evading justice.
“Please have a human heart and allow me to go for a scan tonight or be taken to a hospital where I can receive treatment. We will pay for the scan ourselves,” Matembe pleaded, questioning why her visible distress was not being accepted as sufficient grounds for intervention.
She urged the judiciary to show compassion, reminding them of the biblical teaching to “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” Magistrate Atim acknowledged Matembe’s age and expressed sympathy but underscored the need for decisions to be based on law and documented evidence, not just feelings.
The magistrate directed that the necessary medical documents be presented to the court promptly for consideration, scheduling a follow-up for the next day. She assured Matembe that the court was acting within legal confines and was not an instrument of oppression.
Matembe remains on remand as the case proceeds. The court awaits formal medical documentation before making further rulings on her request for medical care.
