Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miria Matembe was on Tuesday brought before the Magistrates Court and subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison. The charges stem from alleged social media statements attributed to her that prosecutors claim promote sectarianism.

Matembe, 73, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Sheila Gloria Atim, a week after she had been reported missing. She was formally charged under Section 38(1) of the Penal Code Act, Cap 120.

Prosecutors allege that in June 2026, Matembe made statements through social media platforms, including posts linked to DK TV Uganda. The specific statement cited claims that “all our taxes have been spent on Banyankole women ministers.”

Authorities contend that such remarks were designed to incite hostility, hatred, or ill will among different communities, forming the basis of the sectarianism charge. The investigation into the origin and authenticity of these social media publications is ongoing.

Magistrate Atim ordered Matembe’s remand until July 1, 2026, to allow for the completion of investigations. The former minister, who has become a vocal critic and human rights advocate, had been held incommunicado for nearly a week prior to her court appearance. She appeared to be in distress, requiring assistance to walk.

Prosecutors indicated that their continuing inquiries aim to establish the full context, reach, and intent behind the alleged statements, emphasizing the need to gather digital evidence. The case has been adjourned for further mention as the investigation proceeds.
