Mityana Municipality is set to embark on a transformative urban development program, focusing on rehabilitating the central taxi park, upgrading the Central Market, and improving key road networks. These ambitious projects are being supported by funding from the World Bank Group, aiming to modernize the town and enhance public services.
During a recent stakeholders’ meeting, a strong call was made for inclusive planning. Francis Zaake, the Youth Representative for Mityana Municipality in Parliament, urged municipal authorities to ensure comprehensive consultation with residents, especially traders and taxi operators who will be directly impacted.
Zaake stressed that development initiatives should genuinely improve people’s lives and not disrupt their existing livelihoods. He advocated for the full involvement of affected individuals in all planning stages and the provision of suitable alternative locations for their businesses. “We must remember that behind every market stall and taxi stage is a family that depends on that income,” he stated, highlighting the importance of considerate and inclusive development.
The gathered leaders, including district and municipal officials, discussed implementation strategies and the necessity for cross-party cooperation. Joseph Luzige underscored the mandate of leaders to serve their constituents, emphasizing that political differences should not impede progress. He reiterated the importance of identifying and securing alternative working spaces for displaced traders and taxi operators before any construction commences.
Mityana South Member of Parliament Henry Kamya Makumbi echoed these sentiments, calling for unity among leaders to ensure the projects benefit all residents, irrespective of their political affiliations. He noted that enhanced infrastructure would foster economic growth and improve service delivery.
Officials confirmed that Mityana Municipality has met the prerequisites for World Bank funding. The focus now shifts to equipping local leaders and technical teams with the skills to manage these projects transparently and effectively engage the community. Steven Bogere emphasized that successful implementation hinges on community participation, ensuring development benefits those it is intended for.
