Tragedy struck Mbarara City overnight as a fierce fire ripped through an electrical shop, resulting in the death of the owner and the loss of merchandise valued in the millions.

The blaze, which occurred at the Bishop Wills building on Garage Street in Kakoba Division, claimed the life of Fred Tumusiime, 55. He was reportedly inside the shop when the fire broke out.

According to Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira, Mr. Tumusiime, a resident of Nyakaizi in Kakoba Division, sustained severe burn injuries. He was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital by bystanders before emergency services arrived, but sadly succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning.

“After we put out the fire, we found out that the owner of the shop, whose name is Fred Tumusiime, was in the shop at the time of the fire,” SP Kasasira stated. “He sustained serious burns and was critically injured and rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital… and as we speak as of today morning he was pronounced dead at around 10 a.m. today.”

Fire, Rescue, and Services personnel worked diligently to contain the fire, successfully preventing it from spreading to adjacent structures. However, the electrical shop itself was reduced to ruins.

Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are currently underway, with police actively looking into the incident. Source: Daily Monitor (Uganda)
