Star striker Robert Lewandowski has officially joined Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire FC, signing a contract that will keep him with the team until 2028. The 37-year-old Polish international leaves Barcelona after a four-year tenure in La Liga, which concluded at the end of the recent season when his contract expired.
Lewandowski’s decision to join the MLS side marks a significant career move, with reported interest also coming from AC Milan and clubs in the Saudi Pro League. As Poland’s all-time leading scorer, his arrival in Chicago is anticipated to make him one of the league’s highest earners.
The signing is seen as a major coup for Chicago Fire, promising a significant boost not only to the team’s competitive aspirations but also to the city itself, which hosts one of the largest Polish expatriate communities globally.
Chicago Fire, currently performing well in the MLS Eastern Conference and having recently made the playoffs, are preparing to resume their season after the World Cup break. Club officials have expressed excitement about the deal.
“His arrival reinforces our ambition to compete for trophies and raises the standards for the club to heights worthy of this city,” stated Director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter. “We cannot wait to get to work with him and have Chicago see first-hand why he is among the most revered sporting icons in the world.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Lewandowski spent 12 seasons in the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, amassing 10 league titles and a Champions League trophy in 2020. He was also a strong contender for the 2020 Ballon d’Or and won the Best Fifa Men’s Player Award twice.
His time at Barcelona saw him win three La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey, contributing 120 goals in 193 appearances. However, recent injury concerns limited his starts in the past season.
This move comes as Barcelona actively reshapes its attacking options following Lewandowski’s departure. The club has already secured Anthony Gordon and is rumored to be pursuing other high-profile forwards.
