WhatsApp Rolls Out Usernames for Enhanced Privacy

Instant messaging giant WhatsApp is rolling out a long-awaited feature that will allow its over three billion users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers. This update, announced by parent company Meta, marks a substantial enhancement to user privacy on the platform.

Traditionally, WhatsApp has relied on phone numbers as the primary identifier, a system that often meant exposing personal digits in group chats, business dealings, and when connecting with new contacts. The new username feature aims to address these privacy concerns by providing an alternative way to connect.

Meta emphasizes that this feature prioritizes privacy over public discoverability. Unlike many social media platforms, WhatsApp’s usernames will not be publicly searchable. To initiate contact, users will need to know the exact username of the person they wish to message, and there will be no directory or suggested users for easy finding.

Selected users have already begun receiving notifications to reserve their unique usernames, with a broader global rollout expected in the coming months. WhatsApp is also introducing an optional “username key” for an extra layer of verification.

The update is poised to have a considerable impact in regions like Uganda, where WhatsApp is a vital communication tool for businesses, educational institutions, community groups, and marketplaces. It will allow individuals and organizations to maintain reachability through a distinct handle while safeguarding their personal phone numbers.

Users can check for the availability of the username feature by updating their WhatsApp application and navigating to Settings > Account > Username. Meta also anticipates that businesses and creators will be able to reserve usernames tied to their existing brands, improving consistency and reducing impersonation risks.
