Dr. Keith Kakame, a physician at Mulago National Referral Hospital, explains that regular disruption of sleep patterns can lead to ‘brain fog,’ impairing cognitive functions and decision-making. He emphasizes that adults require six to eight hours of sleep nightly for bodily recovery.

Furthermore, individuals with pre-existing health conditions, such as hypertension, are particularly vulnerable. Essential hormonal regulation, including that of blood pressure, occurs during sleep, and any disruption can exacerbate these conditions.

Beyond physical fatigue, the late hours have also fueled a surge in overnight sports betting. Charity Namuswe, a psychiatric nurse, notes the added mental and emotional strain this places on fans, especially those facing financial losses. The combination of sleep deprivation and gambling stress can lead to heightened anxiety, irritability, and difficulty managing daily responsibilities.

As the tournament progresses into its more intense stages, health professionals urge fans to prioritize their well-being. They advocate for a balanced approach, suggesting fans enjoy key matches while utilizing highlights for others, ensuring that the passion for football does not compromise their health, productivity, or mental peace.
