Lewis Rubongoya, the Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has voiced strong criticism regarding the persistent suppression of opposition figures within Uganda. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Rubongoya highlighted the experiences of prominent opposition leaders as evidence of serious deficiencies in the country’s democratic freedoms and the fairness of its political landscape.
Rubongoya specifically pointed to the cases of former Ethics Minister Dr. Miria Matembe, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. He argued that the way these individuals have been treated demonstrates that substantial changes are necessary to foster a truly democratic and equitable political environment.
He noted that opposition politicians continue to encounter significant structural and institutional hurdles that impede their ability to participate meaningfully in politics. Rubongoya emphasized the need for greater adherence to constitutional rights and democratic freedoms for all citizens.
The NUP official’s remarks come at a time when Dr. Matembe is facing charges and is currently seeking bail after being remanded. Her case has attracted considerable attention from political stakeholders and civil society organizations, with concerns raised about her well-being and the legality of her detention process.
While not delving into the legal specifics of Matembe’s case, Rubongoya used it to illustrate his broader point about the constricting political space for opposition voices. He also included Lukwago and Besigye’s ongoing challenges as further examples of a pattern that underscores the necessity for democratic reforms.
The NUP has also been contesting the results of a recent by-election, citing irregularities. Despite these concerns, the party plans to participate in upcoming local council and women’s council elections, advocating for increased transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
Rubongoya urged party supporters to remain actively involved in elections while simultaneously advocating for reforms that will enhance the credibility and fairness of Uganda’s electoral system. The NUP maintains that consistent engagement and a push for reforms are key components of their strategy for the upcoming grassroots polls.
