Berlin faces a debate over the fate of one of the last visible structures from Adolf Hitler’s former power center. While the New Reich Chancellery itself was largely destroyed and dismantled after World War II, a significant bunker built beneath it still stands on a patch of wasteland.
City officials, including Berlin’s Housing Senator Christian Gaebler, are advocating for the bunker’s demolition to make way for new housing and office developments. Gaebler stated that preserving the bunker should not obstruct vital housing projects, nor should it become a site for potential pilgrimage.
However, this proposal is meeting strong opposition from historical preservation groups. Dietmar Arnold, chairman of the Berlin Underworlds Association, described the demolition plan as “absolute madness.” He emphasized the bunker’s significance as a remnant of the Nazi regime’s power center and argued that such historical sites should not be erased.
Arnold suggests an alternative: transforming the bunker into a museum and memorial site, potentially in collaboration with the Holocaust Museum. He believes that Germany has already lost too much of its history, both Nazi and Communist, and that this trend must stop.
The bunker, distinct from the more famous Führerbunker, was used by staff of the Reich Chancellery and later served as a hospital. Approximately 1,200 square meters of the complex remain intact, with walls and ceilings measuring 1.7 meters thick. Arnold even suggests that construction could potentially be feasible on top of the existing structure without full demolition.
The Berlin State Monuments Council has also voiced criticism, stating the bunker possesses “significant historical value” as a symbol of the Nazi regime’s aggressive expansion and its eventual downfall. They recommend a thorough assessment for its potential as a historic monument.
